Graphics and performance
MSO Classic looks like the original game, but the client draws it with a new renderer. This guide covers what changed and how to adjust the display settings.
Checklist
- Any graphics card with Direct3D 10 support can run it.
- Set a frame rate limit with MaxFPS.
- Display settings are in Config/Config.ini.
Direct3D 11
The client now uses Direct3D 11 instead of the original Direct3D 8. Direct3D 11 is part of Windows, so you don’t need to install DirectX. You need a graphics card that supports Direct3D 10 or newer.
High refresh rates
The game still updates 30 times a second, like the original, but movement and the camera are now drawn smoothly between those updates. On a 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor, the game runs at your monitor’s refresh rate. You can set a frame rate limit or remove it.
Widescreen
On a widescreen monitor, the game shows more of the world at the sides instead of stretching the picture. The interface scales with your resolution, and you can set the scale yourself.
The game opens in a borderless window by default. To play in a normal window, tick Windowed mode in the launcher.
Options window
The Options window (O) has brightness, sight distance, and shadow settings for your own character, monsters and NPCs, and other players.
Display settings
The other display settings are in Config/Config.ini in the game folder, under [Display]. Close the game, edit the file in a text editor and start the game again.
