Your first character

After you log in, you make a character on the world you picked by choosing a name, a look and a starting weapon. There are no classes, so any character can use any weapon later on.

Getting Started

Checklist

  • Create a new character
  • Customize how you looks like
  • Choose your first weapon
  • Play the game

Create a character

Once you've logged in, the Choose a character window shows the characters you have on that world. Click New Character to make one.

A game account has two open character slots on each world, and the other two slots are marked Locked. A Character Scroll unlocks one of them, but only on the world where you use it. The scroll can be traded between players, and it also comes out of the Crimson Dragon Chest in the Lost Temple raid about one time in five.

The video below shows the whole process from start to finish.

Customize your look

The Create new character window opens next to a preview of your character, so you can see each change as you make it.

Type a name into the Name box and click Check to see whether it's still available. A name can be 4 to 16 letters and numbers long, with no spaces or symbols, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two each. It has to be unique on its own world, and it can't be the same as the name of a guild there, but someone on the other world can have the same name as you.

Below the name, the arrows let you choose your Gender, Hair, Face, Attire and Shoes. Each gender has five hairstyles and five faces, and there are two outfits and two pairs of shoes to start with. Changing your gender resets the hair, face, attire and shoes you've picked, so it's easiest to choose the gender first. The Height and Weight sliders at the bottom make your character a little taller or shorter and a little heavier or lighter.

Choose your first weapon

The Weapon arrows choose what your character is holding when the game starts. Sword, Fist, Katana and Spear fight up close and take their damage from STR, while Bow and Dart attack from a distance and take theirs from AGI, which also lets their normal attacks reach a little further as it goes up.

Weapon

Reach

Damage stat

Its skills

Sword

Close

STR

Chan Song hits everything around you

Fist

The shortest, with the quickest attacks

STR

Ye Chou and Fen Chin hit everything around you, and Ye Chou and Chon Shaw can stun

Katana

Close

STR

Every skill raises your critical hit chance, Shan Fon hits an area, and Nu Pi can also stun

Spear

The longest of the close-range weapons

STR

Hen Sou and Wu Long hit everything around you

Bow

The longest, with the slowest attacks

AGI

Po Tien and Liu Sin hit an area, and Bai Bu helps you dodge

Dart

Long

AGI

Every skill poisons what it hits, and Tien Lo and Chi Yu hit an area

Each of the four close-range weapons also has one skill with a much longer reach. The choice only sets the weapon you start with, since any character can pick up and use all six later on, and with Martial Path one character can keep up to four builds, each with its own level, stats and gear, so you can try another weapon on the same character. The Weapons and Skills guide goes through each weapon's skills in more detail.

When everything looks right, click Create.

Basic System

Entering the world

Back in Choose a character, select your new character and click Connect. The Channel List opens next, since the starting map has three channels. Channels are copies of the same map that spread the players out, and each one is marked Smooth, Fair or Busy depending on how many players are on it, so you can pick any of them and click Connect again.

Every new character starts in Dimension Router, and the gate marked Lan Chow takes you to Lan Chow, your first town, where you'll find the shops, the bank, the Book Seller and the Training Master. Dimension Router allows fights between players, so another player who has turned on PK mode can attack you while you're there, although dying costs nothing at all until you reach level 5.

The first character you make on each world also gets six starter boxes, which sit in the first slots of your inventory and are called Classic Sealed Lv 1 to Lv 6. Each box opens with a double-click once you've reached its level:
