Changes to character names, and the new nickname system

Why character names are changing, and how nicknames work

Until now, character names could use letters from any language. We allowed it so everyone could give their character a name that felt like their own, and a lot of you did.

Over time, though, it became clear that this made playing together harder. When a name is written in a language you can’t read or type, you can’t whisper that player, invite them to a party or add them as a friend. In a game where so much is about playing with other people, that gets in the way more than we expected.

So starting with the update on 24th of October 2026, new character names can only use English letters and numbers. We didn’t want to take away the chance to show who you are, so the same update adds nicknames. A nickname appears under your character’s name and can be written in your own language, so the name you chose can still be seen by everyone around you.

Existing characters keep their current names. To make the change easier, every character will also get a free Scroll of Renaming. You can use it to switch to a name that fits the new rule and keep your old one as your nickname, or just to pick something new.

The new name rule

  • English letters (A–Z) and numbers (0–9) only, with no spaces or symbols

  • 4 to 16 characters long

  • Applies to new characters and to the Scroll of Renaming

Setting a nickname

Open the character window (C), click Nickname, type it in and press Set. You can change it as often as you like at no cost, and clearing the box removes it. A nickname can be up to 16 English letters or 8 Korean, Chinese or Japanese characters, and it can include spaces. Thai isn’t supported yet.

Getting your Scroll of Renaming

The scroll will be sent to every characters on all servers after the update, and your mailbox lights up when it arrives. Open the Gifts tab, open the gift and press Take, and the scroll goes into the Item Mall tab of your inventory, so keep one slot free there. Each character gets its own scroll. Characters created after this update won’t receive one.

Remember to start the game through the launcher so you get the update.

Thanks for understanding, and see you in game!
